Commerce Minister, Humayun Akhtar Khan has asked for negotiation on Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between Kenyan and Pakistan as it was important for further promotion of trade between the two countries.

He also assured the Kenyan Government in his meeting with the Kenyan Vice President that Free Trade Agreement signed with Sri Lanka would not have negative impact on the import of Kenyan tea.

Humayun expressed hope that the proposed scheme of establishment of a warehouse in Kenya would be implemented soon with the assistance of the Kenyan government.

He stated this while addressing Pak-Kenya Joint Business Council. The Kenyan Chapter of the Joint Business Council was formally launched on July 30.

He expressed his hope that this would open a new chapter in trade relations between Kenya and Pakistan.

Humayun Akhtar also met the Vice President of Kenya and discussed the regional and international security situation. They expressed their satisfaction on the ongoing co-operation between the two countries on the matters of security.

The Vice President promised to facilitate travelling by Pakistani businessmen to Kenya and recognised the strategic importance of bilateral trade relations, Pakistan being the largest buyer of Kenyan tea.

The Commerce Minister informed a group of Kenyan businessmen and government officials that Pakistan was strongly fighting against terrorism and he announced that terrorists involved in the bombing of the US Embassy in Kenya had been arrested in Pakistan.

The concluding session of the Joint Ministerial Commission was held after the launching of the Pak-Kenya JMC. Pakistan and Kenya signed two Memoranda of Understanding on co-operation in the field of in formation Technology and Tourism.

A joint communiqué was issued on -the occasion of the concluding session of the Pak-Kenya Joint Ministerial Commission held in Nairobi from July 29 to 30.

The two countries pledged to co-operate in the field of agriculture, information technology, tourism and facilitate the businessmen of each other country for doing business by easing of visa restrictions and issuance of work permits.

The Commerce Minister and Kenyan Foreign Minister reviewed issues relating to regional and global security and intelligence and agreed to explore the possibility of concluding an extradition treaty between the two countries.

The Commerce Minister also visited the Chinese Trade Center in Kenya in order to evaluate the prospects of establishment of Pakistan warehouse and display center in Kenya. He also met the Chinese Embassy officials at Nairobi in this connection.
